A TOTAL of 412,245 people out of the 1.24 million who had taken study loans from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) have yet to repay the money they had borrowed from the scheme.
Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the breakdown revealed that 188,371 or 36% of male students had failed to repay their loans, out of 527,152 male borrowers, while 265,305 or 33% female students, out of 814,221 female borrowers, had also failed to repay their loans.
The highest number of defaulters, he added, were from Sabah (32,428), Kelantan (54,446), Terengganu (29,089), Kedah (41,325) and Perlis (5,129).
In his written reply to a question raised by Lim Lip Eng (DAP - Segambut), Muhyiddin said several steps had been taken to recover the loans, such as setting up 12 PTPTN offices, two one-stop centres and four branches nationwide to encourage loan repayments.
He added that other measures taken included initiating legal action against defaulters and blacklisting them from travelling overseas.
However, he said, legal action was the last option taken to recover loans from defaulters.

PTPTN: Unsettled RM2.3bil in loans will deprive 100,000 students of facility
LENGGONG: The 400,000 hardcore errant borrowers who owe RM2.3bil in National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans are advised to pay up, or they will deny over 100,000 students their right to obtain study loans from the corporation.
Its chairman Datuk Shamsul Anuar Nasarah cited that even if RM300mil was unpaid, at least 15,000 students would not be able to obtain study loans.
"At the moment, there are some 400,000 hardcore errant borrowers owing RM2.3bil. This is a big amount," he said after attending an Aidilfitri function of the Lenggong parliamentary constituency, here, Sunday.
Shamsul Anuar said until July 31 this year, 2.24 million students had obtained the facility from PTPTN involving RM50.52bil.
Within the same period, he said, the corporation managed to collect back RM4.32bil.
"The paying back of PTPTN loans has improved among borrowers due to the awareness programmes and enforcement action carried out, and public cooperation," he added.
Shamsul Anuar, who is also Lenggong MP, said the corporation managed to collect back RM553mil in 2009, RM638mil in 2010, RM737mil in 2011 and RM800mil in 2012.
He said each year, PTPTN gave out RM1.3bil in loans to 200,000 borrowers, and intended to give to more applicants in the future. - Bernama
